Intimidated by the sommelier in a restaurant?

Do you feel intimidated by the Sommelier in a restaurant? Stephen explains how they can help to enhance your evening.

So, what is a sommelier? Or rather, who is a sommelier?

A sommelier is a French word for a wine waiter. Now the wine waiter, or the Somm, the sommelier, is usually responsible for putting the wine list together in the first place. So he/she is likely to have the best knowledge of the wines.

They’re responsible for the ordering, for the maintenance of the wines, making sure they’re at the right temperature.

I became captivated with the world of wine whilst on a visit to the Barossa Valley during my gap year in Australia. I went on to join a London wine merchant and studied wine for several years before starting my own wine business at 24. I sold the business aged 30 and went into Telecoms for 15 years, during which time I began cooking up the plan to create Mirabeau.
